What a bunch of lies Mr. Whitaker, a great actor, spread about the myth of the self-made man. 'It is possible for a kid from east Texas, raised in south central LA and Carson, who believes in his dreams, commits himself to them with his heart, to touch them and to have them happen.'
No Forest, it is not possible for everyone that works hard. I have plenty of students who work hard and WILL NEVER become a success like you. It is not true that all actors, basketball players and business people will be come rich if their heart is in it.
Certainly, hard work and belief in self will increase your chances, but it is not a guarentee. Statistics show that if you start poor in life, no matter how hard you try, you are highly likely to end up poor. Certainly, keep hope alive, be honest, care, and work hard. That MIGHT lead to success, however unlikely it is in reality. I am happy for your success due to your live of acting and hard work, but there is luck involved and many factors in your success that a short speech cannot cover. By saying it's all commitment and belief, you ignore reality and blame the less well off in our society for the circumstances they were born in.
